Marc Jacobs & Vintage Polka Dots

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

New York Fashion Week F/W 2011. Can’t get enough of it. Marc Jacobs, still high from the praise of last season’s first womens line seen from Jacobs in years, continues to be the moment’s catwalk darling. He is still living in the 1970’s, although these silhouettes are the dressed-up version of the fluid and loose outlines he gave us previously.

Dipped in fantastic and over-sized polka dots, we saw fitted peplum blazers, curve-hugging hobble skirts, matching dotted hosiery and the sweetest polka-dotted saucer vinyl berets by milliner Stephen Jones I’ve ever seen. Some of the body-con dresses appeared reptilian, in violet, metallic silver and chocolate brown. The whole line elicited a troupe of saucy airline stewardesses, ready to debark their flight and sashay to the nearest dimly lit cocktail bar. I especially love the sense of fun Jacobs can’t seem to help but inject in his designs. Dressing is sexy and seductive, yes, but you also feel like his women have a wicked sense of sarcastic humor and tricks up their fitted, set-in sleeves.

Enjoy Jacobs’ style lines and use of polka dots, both of which are taken quite literally from the glorious 1970’s. Images followed by our original inspiration garments. For sale on the site right now…

NYC Fashion Week Recap: Billy Reid Does Homegrown Vintage

Monday, February 14th, 2011

When Americana designer Billy Reid reached national status after scooping up this years Vogue CFDA award, Alabama suddenly seemed like a much cooler place to hail from. Quietly creating sturdy, stud-worthy menswear for gentlemen from the farm and the fortune 500 offices, Reid does a great job at keeping classic vintage cuts and fabrics at hand. Rich golden cotton corduroy, smooth and chunky wool blazers and snappy leather jackets were highlights of Reid’s current Fall 2011 line. The style lines are demure but unabashedly classy, handsome and reminiscent of 1950’s weekend wear. These are not show-off clothes. They are clothes for the man who isn’t afraid to get dirt under his fingernails and mud on his pants.

Enjoy some of Reid’s work and then similar vintage counterparts of ours.

Vintage Cardigans Resurface

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

The general popularity of menswear cardigans continue to keep them resurfacing on the runways. The latest batch has been blogged about everywhere but I feel a responsibility to include it because of their absolute vintage feel. Even as we begin to tiptoe out of Winter, the chill in the air is strong enough to warrant a cozy knit cardigan, even if it’s only covering a white tee.

Knitwear as a whole it seems, has found a second life in modern fashion. Mills are being refurbished, reconstructed and rerun by other companies eager to put their stamp on the industry. Individual hand-knitting by designers appears strong as well so just because that vintage pullover you found doesn’t have a cool tag, don’t be so quick to dismiss its authenticity.

For diminishing vintage musty smell, try soaking the knit in a bucket of hot water with just a few drops of soap and air-drying. Or spraying with lightly-soaped water and then drying with a few fragrant dryer sheets thrown in – but make sure you’re on an air-drying or delicate setting! Otherwise you may have to pass your knit onto your little sibling.

The Vintage Ten Gallon Fedora

Friday, January 21st, 2011

Well, that’s not exactly a grammatically correct hat title but it rolled off the tongue nicely. I’ve just been spying too many cuties not to comment on the fabulous big hat trend we’re seeing everywhere currently. I feel like these hats will drip into Spring – they go with almost any outfit terrifically and can be accessorized in so many ways; feathers, jewels, stones, fringe, leather, fur, trinkets.

Wide-brimmed fedoras in neutral colors conjure a stud-like Indiana Jones feel, cavaliers adorned with brightly tinted plumage sing fancy splendor and the classic Americana ten gallon Western hats are just so John Wayne dusty and fantastic.

Electric Fix

Sunday, January 16th, 2011

Oh yay, oh yay, oh yay!!! OMG, YAY. This is pulsing through my head as I browse the budding spring collections for 2011. Vogue’s January pages are  bursting with electric textures and florescent features…oh, neon. Neon! Beautiful, energetic neon is getting a touch of sophistication in shiny, lacy business suits, loud leather shift dresses and digital dancing duds. It’s the latest upgrade of the color blocking the 80’s did so well. Check out what they’ve got, check out what we’ve got, and then plug and play. FRICKIN’ YAY!

And now Monster Vintage presents…

The Art of Italian Tailoring

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

vimeo.com/16443611

The fabulous crew over at Kid Dandy are currently in the process of finalizing the editing on their new documentary titled, “O’Mast”. From the trailor, this looks to be a most romantic, luxurious and highly polished insider view of the art of Italian Neapolitan menswear tailoring.

Some of the men inside the design houses talk about beginning work at a very young age, to learn the precise methodology to couture tailoring, from choosing the perfect weight textiles to time consuming hand stitches. The end result has been perfectly constructed made-to-measure men’s suits for many generations of chic Italians.

In my limited knowledge of tailored menswear, creating a fitted suit from scratch is an incredibly time-consuming endeavor. There are numerous layers of interlining, interfacing, padded hand stitches and fittings. The art of it all is so inspiring and intriguing.

Highly anticipating the final cut.

Here are a few googled images of finely dressed men from around the world, followed by some of the more couture suits currently on our website.

Vintage Bells & Whistles for NYE

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

Sparkle, sheer, satin, more sparkle. New Year’s Eve is the one night a year to really, I mean really, do it up. Hair, nails, jewelry and clothing! I’m so excited about getting dolled up this year that I’m finding myself overwhelmed with the possibilities. Floor length gown? Short short frilly skirt and blouse? Lace? Charmeuse? Satin? Silk? A fur coat to keep warm? Black? White? Cream? Pink?

I may raid the closet here at the warehouse and pretend I’m Brigitte Bardot or Rita Hayworth…

Below are my NYE dream list of dresses from our catalog and a smattering of images from the internets.

Vintage Faux Fur On Real People

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

I was still obsessing over fur garments for Winter from the last post so I started collecting rad images of rad people who are as into the style as the runways. I love the widespread scale between Chanel’s over the top representation of faux fur garments and the way real folks are interpreting the trend for everyday life. The images are from The Sartorialist, Style.com and various fashion blogs.

A Vintage (Faux) Fur Winter

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

I’ve been scouring all my favorite go-to blogs for great Winter style inspiration. Something out of the ordinary or perhaps tried and true style but with a twist. Seeing men’s trench coats layered on women has been fun, lots of uncoordinated layers that include multiple fabrics, colors, leathers and fur.

Fur, especially faux fur has been everywhere. It’s so fantastic to see how technology every year gives us more and better faux choices, from the very real to the outrageous (I saw bright pink fur at a fabric recently that was dotted with an all-over heart print with, “I LOVE YOU”, inside each heart’s center).

Fur vests, with and without sleeves, hand bags and clutches, stoles and wraps. My favorite has been the addition of tufts of fur on shoulders as epaulets or placed in unusual places in garments. You can take a vintage fur that’s falling apart and use the fur patches to experiment with a piece in your wardrobe that needs a new personality. Rubber cement and lining the skin with muslin or another lightweight fabric will help secure the fur and ensure its construction well past the melting snow.

Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld gave us more faux fur representations that we could handle at his over-the-top Fall 2010 show (where he imported glaciers for the models to traverse through). While these looks may be a bit overwhelming for us non-model citizens, I thought it was a fun way to use faux fur. After Chanel’s images, some of our own coveted faux choices from the website.

More Mustard, Please

Monday, December 13th, 2010

Every now and then I become entranced by a color and I start seeing it everywhere. Lately my obsession appears in the form of a golden ray of sunlight that transcends the darkness of these long winter days. It can be none other than…drumroll please…delicious and wholesome mustard yellow! Voila! Don’t you just feel a little warmer thinking about it? I do…

What I love about this color is that it’s so versatile and charismatic, especially with this year’s fall and winter collections. It can debut as a modest accessory that brightens up an otherwise dreary palate. It can melt away the animosity between oft-warring colors like black and brown. Or it can take the spotlight by storm in the form of an unabashedly cheerful overcoat or wiggle dress. It can look infinitely classy or infinitely cheesy, you choose. And as anyone with an eye on this last century’s fashion tides can see, each decade has had its own interpretation of this magical color. What’s yours?
