It’s sweater weather here in the Northwest! When the months of cold and rain approach, I find it’s helpful to try to get myself amped up about the change of the seasons, same as I do when spring and summer are coming. I tell myself that soon I’ll be able to justify sitting by the fire all weekend drinking tea and reading. Soon I’ll have lots of occasions for early game nights with my friends. It will be cozy and dark! And, perhaps best of all, I’ll get to wear tons of sweaters! Like this stunning 1970’s Native American design sweater. This one is super thick and cozy feeling, and in great condition. I could imagine the hipsters of Portland fighting tooth and nail to get their hands on this. Not only will this sweater keep you warm, it’ll keep you looking good too. And not with in an over-the-top neon-pink-fanny-pack kind of way, though I like that too. This sweater is for someone who wants to say “vintage” and “cozy” with a soft touch.

After a lifetime of obsessing over womens fashion, I found new life inside the warehouse walls at Monster Vintage and discovered the wide and stylish world of menswear. We sell pallets of vintage gear to fashion-forward men all over the globe and we’d like to think they’re all better looking for it. Since the general theme over here at MV is what goes around comes around, we love seeing yesteryear’s trends become well, trendy again. An editorial from February’s Tendencias magazine revealed so many summer prophecies, we couldn’t help but get excited.

First up, suspenders! In any color, any pattern and either worn properly or left to hang loosely at the sides, they look amazing with almost anything. Shoot for the authentic, vintage kind that have leather button loops as opposed to metal claps although those would suffice just fine as well. Super easy to dress them up with oxfords, blazers and slacks or down with Fruit Of The Loom tank tops and jean shorts. We just had a lad in the U.K. order a pair from us and I’m quite sure he’ll be stunning in them.

From us:

Next up, rolled cuff denim pants and shorts! Gotta love denim. Be it vintage Levi Strauss, LEE or Wrangler, dark, faded, chambray or distressed, it’s hard to go wrong. Until the weather is a bit warmer, cuff your pants James Dean style and pair with leather loafers (see photo above). When the temperature does rise, with your jeans on, mark a little line 2 to 3 inches below where you want the shorts to fall and cut off using sharp scissors. Then fold once or twice or thrice!

Last but not least, we have vests! Specifically, leather motorcycle style vests! We’re thrilled that everyone is wearing Rick Owens, his pieces are a nostalgic nod to vintage Schott, Harley-Davidson and our own locally-grown Langlitz Leathers. Asymmetrical zippers, thick extra padding and fringe – the more decoration, the merrier.

THE UNTUCKED WHITE SHIRT
A simple but effective fashion proposal to cleanse the palette was shown at the menswear show by LOUIS VUITTON in Paris last January: the oversized untucked white shirt. It is a look that sits on a knife-edge, what with the incorrect 1990s lads-in-bars flashbacks on one side, and the flowing touch of purified elegance on the other.

Over here at Monster Vintage, we’d take the route of the latter and go with refreshing elegance. Or perhaps at least a casual Friday or post-5pm take on the structured working man’s day. Below are a few of our vintage oxford picks, in white and a smattering of other colors.

This edition of Iconic Fridays is dedicated to Kara who describes my personal style as “goody two shoes with a dirty mouth”- Leather and Lace.
First I have some leather for ya (or “leathuh,” as I have taken to calling it), best exemplefied by the hardcore badasses from Easy Rider. In the sixties, leather was king, even for vegan hippies! Back then, being proud to be an American and being rock n’ roll were one and the same (Jimi Hendrix and the Star Spangled Banner?!). Tough and luxurious, leather makes a statement. And these guys make me want to go home and listen to some Synard!

Recently I was asked: “What’s the sexiest thing a man can wear?” I replied “Nothing at all”. Clearly this was not the answer my friend was seeking out, for I received the ever annoying eyebrow furrow. Later on over some crème brûlée and an hour of Grey’s Anatomy I contemplated the question again- this time a little more seriously. I decided the next best thing to a naked man would be a man in a dapper looking suit. It must be the whole ‘James Bond’- a man of intrigue aura. But a suit lends its wearer a sexy, confident, mysterious, swoon worthy sex appeal… and come on, what girl doesn’t lose her underwear over a man with those qualities?

So this is a note to you fellas- wear more suits. Don’t limit yourself to only wearing a suit to work, weddings, and funerals. Wear them more often so I, and other like women can lust over you in grocery stores, parks, and city streets across America. Put away your jeans, t-shirts and hobo looks for a day, I beg of you!

Ok, I know some of you guys reading this are thinking: “You know how much of a douchebag I’d look wearing a suit for no reason!” (P.S. The reason is to turn on the ladies, and isn’t that your primal goal anyways? Really, wearing a suit is much less work then other methods to get desired results). For those of you who just don’t see the light I will meet you half way, what about a suit jacket? The suit jacket is always an ever so popular charmer. This look is slightly more casual, but it will still do the trick. If you are really daring you can even go for a velvet jacket- after all the holidays are coming up and velvet is the universal ‘holiday season’ fabric.

Below are recommendations that will turn you into a heartthrob:

The leaves have officially changed colors and the Fall fog is rolling in. With Paris Fashion Week at a close, we saw plenty of cold weather options prance down the Frenchie runways and classic leather, skeepskin lined bomber jackets are making their way back onto the backs of stylish gentlemen everywhere from their humble beginnings on Hollywood actors and military aviators in the 1940’s.

Sturdy bomber and trenchcoat style jackets lined in thick, warm sheepskin pile or real fur don’t need much to make a statement. A checkered or paisley scarf perhaps, a mirrored pair of aviator sunglasses, leather gloves…

From Givenchy’s 2008 Fall/Winter line, a single jacket from illustrious Prada and a few juicy options for sale on Monster Vintage:
